It’s 8 pm and I can still see remnants of glowing embers outside my window of what once was the framework of a four story apartment complex building in Lehi. We have lived in this house for almost 5 years and during these 5 years we have seen the field of sagebrush and grasses behind our house slowly transform into the infrastructure and foundation for future housing and apartments.

The construction over these past 4 years has been an integral part of our dinner conversations and summer patio talks while the boys jumped on the trampoline, “What kind of apartments or townhouses are they going to put in? Will they have an ice cream shop? Will TRAX be built out here? Want to walk down and see what they are building?” We had grown fond of the “What ifs?” of a new beginning.

For as much love and beauty Brandon and I have for the outdoors (Brandon more so than me), it is truly remarkable we picked one of the most desolate places along the Wasatch front. It is full of juxtaposition: the wonders of parasailers soaring with their bright parachutes against the “Keep Out Signs” of Geneva Rocks. Golden grasses, rubber rabbit brush, and snakes alongside golf carts and kids on electric scooters. Thus, perhaps today the juxtaposition of a flaming building directly behind our house as we prepared to go to church seemed all too surreal and ordinary. One moment, I’m yelling at my kids to grab their cellos and valuables and the next we’re laughing at my over-reaction (for which my kids will never let it go).

Tonight, I’m grateful for the 100+ First Responders and Firefighters who came (and who are still here) so I could live in this juxtaposition for another night. Thank you!

I choreographed this piece wanting to create pressure and precision while paying homepage to my earlier modern dance heritage of shapes and angles. As of late, I have been trying to honor my past movement ancestry and letting the movement and the moment guide the creative process. In addition, I have been ever so cognizant of the environment, ground surface and texture of the floor trying to optimize and explore the technique that emerges from it.

Well, today was a full swim in Yankee Doodle and it was a thriller. Grateful for the quick 24 hr trip down with the family and back. Things have been so busy I was worried we’d miss the entire Fall season of canyoneering but we got one in!

This past week I had the chance to do a service project at the Utah Lake and then attend a lecture on the Great Salt Lake. Both lakes are stunning and I am blessed to live between these two bodies of water. Being with the Utah Lake and learning about the Great Salt Lake re-grounds me in this vital work to participate and do my small part.

Felt like moving in quick time with a sense of flurry today. This Falls has been so beautiful and I missed truly seeing it close up. Today marks the first day since August I got to come back to these mountains and be with them. On my commute I got to witness the grandeur of Fall approach with its vibrant color against the granite peaks. The snow blanketed the tops of the mountains this weekend so now it feels like a season of beginnings. Sometimes you miss the moment, reminding you gently to come back home and ground yourself.

What a respite to move alongside and with the Mediterranean Sea this morning. I had the wonderful opportunity to facilitate stories of the lands each of us call home at the @ismeta_association conference today. It was a tender reminder we all belong to each other and the land moves through us and with us.

I had the wonderful opportunity to facilitate stories of the lands each of us call home at the @ismeta_association conference today. It was a tender reminder we all belong to each other and the land moves through us and with us.

This Saturday @michellekesler and I had the wonderful opportunity to present a new work that combines cello and dance performed by our students @gracecsnow , @thomas_8811 and @laur__carroll at the @ldsearthstewardship Fall Forum. For this creation, we met with the keynote speaker Steven Peck @sciencehoroscope to discuss the topic of emergence and creation and how the performance might reflect or comment on potential themes.

In our discussion, I was inspired to choreograph on beauty beyond function as well as the attributes of the Townsend’s solitaires birds that Steve spoke about. A few quotes from Steve that resonated for me throughout the creative process:
“Emergence is patterns and structures that come out of multiplicity, the way that many things start to combine and structure each other and influence each other and begin… the creation of the new, the novel.”
“That’s exactly what emergence is to me. It’s the possible. And it can happen at any level, at any time.”
“Birds singing… they’re not the strongest, they’re not the bravest. They’re the best actors.”

I am grateful for @ldsearthstewardship for the opportunity to collaborate and merge the disciplines of science and the arts in order to create new beginnings and possibilities— possibilities rooted in a compassionate world where we care for the earth and all life on it.

Before the Europe the trip my kids kept asking when I would stop working and I would reply “I am trying to get everything done so I can be with you.” Incredible late nights and early morning attached to the computer so I could have for a brief season incredible late nights and early morning sunrises with the boys. I’m grateful we could push our bodies in unique ways as a family and witness their growth as adolescents.

I’m grateful for the seasons and I’m reminded of Prince Hal in Henry the IV Part I when he states “if all the year was playing holiday, to sport would be as tedious as to work” so here is to another season of change and work.

My body has gone through so much in a year post surgery and it is a sweet reminder of the need for gratitude for all the seasons- the holidays and the work.

Wind Rivers, Wyoming. More backpacking with the family which has given me a lot time to reflect about our family culture and future. As mentioned previously, this is the first year where our boys’ strength and stamina surpasses us. As parents we have been discussing how critical these next 8 years will be with the boys before we are empty nesters. It’s important to climb, hike, run, ski and play with them. At the same time, I also feel the physical reality of maintenance and deterioration of flexibility and mobility in my own dance practice. Of course, it’s not mutually exclusive, but the limitation of time, skill acquisition, and physical practice in both realms is a reality. So these little dance practices are my ongoing practice and research on creating small moments to merge these worlds together in hopes of shaping a family in motion.

May you feel your gentle inner strength as you take each step forward. May you wander and discover the trails of so many who have traversed before you. May you discover new paths to call your own and may you occasionally glance back and smile- remembering you are never alone. However, don’t look back too long, just enough to remember your ancestors, your parents, and God are in step with you. Forward is the way, your soul knows it so let your body lean forward into your next steps of life. The only regret is to not walk.

This trip was a turning point as all 3 boys are much faster, agile, stronger, and coordinated than me. I remember carrying them on my back when they were little and now the tide has turned and they are the ones carrying the bags as we scale over pot holes and shimmy down chimneys. They are beautiful movers. Life is truly a dance, always shifting and navigating the unknown while falling into motion. Nature teaches me about partnerships and reflects back to me my weaknesses while holding and supporting me in the process.

I create a video for Earth Day every year from April to April. This year 8 out of the 12 months have been my recovery with my shoulder. I’ve been reflecting on my body and the Earth’s body this specific year. When you’re injured, you go to triage, see a doctor, sometimes get surgery, and you clear your schedule to make room for P.T. You do everything possible to create the best environment for healing. Along the path, it looks like it’s not going to get better and you feel like throwing in the towel; things become desperate. However, after the timeline well passed what the doctor’s prescribed you begin to heal. Our bodies and the Earth’s body want to heal BUT like a wounded individual both need the resources, the hope, and the time to let the scars heal. Happy Earth Day, may we give this Earth space to heal.

After surgery you are grateful for every “first”. First time you can put your hair up in a ponytail. First time you can raise your arm. First time you can put your arm fully on the floor lying on your back. First push up. First catch fall with your arms. First Bench press. First…First until you realize life is a gift of firsts. Injuries are terrible, I don’t wish it on anyone- but the joy of the firsts gets me every time.

Injuries are terrible, I don’t wish it on anyone- but the joy of the firsts gets me every time.

I’ve hit the 8 month post-opt- shoulder labrum tear and rotator cuff patch with 6 anchors. I’m posting because there maybe a soon-to-be 40-year old like myself who is wanting to get back their bridges, one handed cartwheels, obscure rolling around floor work, and wondering what a “normal” time frame range is at this age.

Things are coming along. I had a few scares including a possible manipulation surgery in month 5 because of my limited outward rotation. The ROM was really limiting my progress and there were a couple of months where I hardly saw any progress. 2 months ago I couldn’t put my wrist under for a bridge but I can get that action more easily. Now it’s slowly increasing the range; progress is happening.

I’ve gone climbing and snowboarding (started 5 months post opt). Climbing is not nearly as scary as snowboarding (afraid of catching an edge and putting my hands out). I’m grateful for every opportunity to train and heal. Grateful for the great medical professionals assisting me. I love being able to research in my body even while injured. Healing is non-linear and the timeframe is based on what your body needs. Apparently, my body liked a slow burn with an acceleration at late 7/early 8 months so keep moving!

Moments of being with each other in the breath and with nature. Stillness as the eyes scan the tiniest hints of motion letting the waves of sound echo over one’s skin. For now is what matters, a singular moment that reminds us the presence of existing. Four months have passed since we last visited this canyon. Moving waters have shifted and created new divots, sand depth, and shifting rocks. This erosion carves an alternative narrative- Imperceptible changes unless one is intimately familiar with the touch of the canyon. Laying on the earth to look up at the sky, skin on wall, and rocks on chest, we observe and merge with Mother Earth.

I’m at that stage where I’m fighting for every degree of motion at every single hour. Some days I’m stagnate, other days the motion is worse, and then other days you get a glimpse that things do improve and you can break through the scar tissue that is there to protect you and Also be your biggest challenge. Here is to 7 weeks post surgery and the gratitude for what I can do every degree of the way.

P.S. Real life practical day-to-day info after having 6 anchors put in to attach the shoulder labrum in place and a patch on the rotator cuff:
1. I can “sort of” put my hair in a ponytail. For weeks I’ve just been doing a side braid but this week I braved the lifting of the elbow up to the head.
2. I can do these assisted range of motion lifts above and to the side with a stick
3. My outward rotation is behind the curve so that is something to watch for this next month.

A barren landscape full of crickets, birds, and sundry grass may not look beautiful to some. Yet, I find such deep beauty in these foothills and reminds me broken bodies can mimic this landscape. Therefore, zooming in, pausing, and focusing in on the details expands one’s notion of beauty and redefining that for oneself.

Life has a way of reminding you that it is full of deep valleys to crawl your way out of and high mountains to climb. This past month has been a valley as I work my way 2.5 weeks post operation of a labrum and rotator cuff repair that took 8 arthroscopic insertions to repair. Not wanting to focus too much on the trauma of the injury, I pivot towards the healing process and focus on miracles and the community that has been my village for these past weeks. A special thanks to my parents for braiding my hair and driving me around as if I were that little girl back in Idaho. Thankful for friends who visit me as we share a meal together, go on walks, talk on the phone, and mourn together. I’m forever grateful- my soul has expanded; humanity is humane. I’m grateful for a partner who will make sure to take our boys to see the world so I can focus on my healing in our home and my physical therapist who has seen it all with me these last 8 years and 4 surgeries later. I’m grateful to God for the hope, faith, and resilience that has been bestowed when I should feel despair and bitterness. I’m grateful for my village and hope we can all find our village and mend as we need to in order to once again climb those mountains (and yes, I will be returning to climbing).

I asked @braydensingley to choreograph the first piece that I hope will one day be a part of this production. 3 amazing days of rehearsal with @mia_felton @allie_the_renn @jacerrrr @kyla.b749, @brinnli.wosnjuk, @_makinleyb_ @kara_w_04 and a day of filming with @steviewonderfilm . I feel so grateful for everyone’s investment in this process and Brayden’s trust in me as a producer. It was 105 degrees today in SLC so we pushed the film call time to 8:00 pm and the camera rolled from 8:30-9:30 pm against the backdrop of the Sunset of the Great Salt Lake.

This morning’s sunrise I woke up at 5:30 am and drove to my 7 am MRI appointment for my left shoulder that I dislocated while climbing last week. Then I ended this day watching fearless dancers move against the backdrop of the falling sun.

Life is full of juxtapositions, disappointments, and wonders. I’m grateful for days like these where I can truly experience the rising sun of discouragement to the falling sun of hope. Art reminds us of that.

Part II: We worked hard for long hours, waking up at 4:30 am to beat the heat and returning in the evening to polish out the phrases in the dark. We slid down waterfalls, wedged through slot canyons, repelled off cliffs, improvised and created in the desert with sounds and sensations we have never felt. We laid on the desert rocks watching the clouds transition and the canyon turn golden yellow. The buzz of a fly was piercing and the sounds of the cello reverberated through the walls. Students’ choreography evolved as they danced barefeet in the sand and on the stones pushing and arcing against the canyon walls. We watched a caterpillar move 3 feet in 4 hours, I caught a lizard without pulling its tail, we laughed by the campsite, and our bodies, minds, and spirits became bolder and wilder. I’m forever grateful for the individuals, resources, and collective harmony that made this research project truly an inspired moment reminding us we don’t have to go far to have an adventure.

The anxiety and mistakes during these excursions can feel monumental ranging from incorrect plane dates, hotel accommodations, lost luggage, and financial cost deficit, all of which I am guilty of with past trips. However, as we keep trying to design these inspired learning moments we get closer to curating that moment of pure knowledge, discovery, and deep personal insights with minimized mistakes. This week perhaps I got the closest I have ever been to that moment with Professor Michelle Kessler (Cello @michellekesler a dear colleague, mother of three, and an outdoor enthusiast. Along the journey we teamed up with incredible creators @mccall.mcc and @sarah_of_wyoming joining us to document the process and help facilitate new information that would inform the creative work between cello and dance. Michelle and I received funding from through the Laycock grant that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and our various Departments @byumusic and @byudance. With these funds we were able to take five students to Northwash of Utah (@brinnli.wosnjuk , @ccristinaas , @gracecsnow , @juliaklumker @_makinleyb_ ) and do some deep research into our craft while enjoying the wonders of this part of the earth we call Utah.

Happy Earth Day and National Dance week! Each year I love to create a compilation of outdoor adventures with my family of the previous year to celebrate this planet Earth we call home.

As a child and teenager I spent most of my time inside in a dance studio. I’m grateful for those years of training and learning to to appreciate the incredible gift of the body. However, now as a parent, I see the deep need to connect our bodies to the Earth and to give our children the opportunity to do the same. We can’t save the Earth (and ourselves) if we don’t love it, and we can’t love it unless we know it through the flesh.

Here is to another year of this miraculous planet and the chance to see and move in the world through children’s eyes.

May we fight and protect the chance for our posterity to breathe clean air, bring water to the Great Salt Lake, prevent plastics in the oceans, honor the heritage of those who have come before, and live a life of movement and freedom that honors the divine spark inherit within ourselves and the planet we are fortunate to call home.

Jump, fall, slide, spin, gallop, run, swing, climb- the Earth is waiting to dance with us if we just take the leap.
